On my travels north from Slovenia I decided to stop off in Salzburg and visit a friend I had met during my travels this year.

I met Jenny in Warsaw in Poland at the hostel I was staying at. I had just come back and was about to call it a night, but met a group of people about to head out and decided to join them. Jenny is Australian, but studying music in Salzburg.

I was only staying the one night in Salzburg, and having been there before on my last European trip I didn’t feel the need to run around madly trying to take photos.

Jenny met me at the train station and after I had dropped my bag off at her apartment we headed into the city. I was shown around the little cobblestone streets in the old part of the town and we had a few drinks at the Stiegl Brauwelt under the Hohensalzburg Fortress and then explored a bit more of the town over the river, including the Mozarteum University of Salzburg where she studies.

We rode back to her flat along the river Salzach – me peddling and Jenny sitting on the rear rack of the bike – very European. She was kind enough to cook me dinner, a glass of wine and give me a place to stay for the night.

So Salzburg was a tiny stop for me, but it was good to catch up with a friend and not play the part of a tourist for a day.
